Teemo Guide — Classic LoL Top Lane Build & Strategy

Complete Teemo guide for League of Legends Classic. Best top lane AP build, runes, mushroom placement, and counters for the Swift Scout. Master Teemo in classic LoL.

Introduction

Teemo, the Swift Scout, is simultaneously the most beloved and hated champion in League of Legends Classic. His Blinding Dart (Q) negates auto-attack damage, his Move Quick (W) gives permanent movement speed, and his ultimate Noxious Trap (R) plants invisible mushrooms that slow and poison enemies who step on them. In classic LoL, Teemo is a lane bully who transitions into a map-control specialist — a well-shroomed map makes the enemy team afraid to walk anywhere. He's also the definitive counter to auto-attack-reliant top laners.

Classic Build

Core Items

| Item | Cost | Why | |------|------|-----| | Liandry's Anguish | 3,200g | %HP burn triggers on mushroom poison — core synergy | | Nashor's Tooth | 3,000g | Attack speed, AP, and on-hit magic damage | | Demonic Embrace | 3,000g | Bonus HP and %HP burn; stacks with Liandry's |

Full Build (AP Teemo)

  1. Liandry's Anguish — Mushrooms deal %HP burn over time
  2. Sorcerer's Shoes — Flat magic penetration
  3. Nashor's Tooth — Split-push power and dueling damage
  4. Demonic Embrace — Double %HP burn; 450 bonus HP
  5. Rabadon's Deathcap — Mushrooms one-shot squishies
  6. Void Staff — % Magic penetration for late game

Situational Items

  • Zhonya's Hourglass — Against assassins; bait with passive stealth
  • Morellonomicon — Anti-heal on mushrooms (covers entire teamfight zones)
  • Rylai's Crystal Scepter — Slow on shrooms and autos (redundant with shroom slow, but stacks utility)
  • Lich Bane — Burstier auto-Q-auto trades
  • Wit's End (on-hit build) — Against heavy AP teams

Runes

Primary: Domination

  • Dark Harvest — Stacks damage every time a mushroom hits a low-HP enemy
  • Cheap Shot — Bonus true damage on blinded/slowed targets
  • Eyeball Collection — AP from takedowns
  • Ultimate Hunter — More mushrooms! Lower R cooldown = more map coverage

Secondary: Sorcery

  • Manaflow Band — Mana for endless mushroom spam
  • Gathering Storm — Scaling AP for late-game mushroom damage

Stat Shards

  • Attack Speed (for farming and dueling)
  • Adaptive Force
  • Armor / Magic Resist

Skill Order

R > Q > E > W

  1. Blinding Dart (Q) — Max first for lane poke and denying CS
  2. Toxic Shot (E) — Max second for on-hit poison damage
  3. Move Quick (W) — One point early; max last
  4. Noxious Trap (R) — Take whenever possible (6/11/16)

Early Levels

Level 1: E — Toxic Shot (harass with auto-attacks) Level 2: Q — Blinding Dart (Q > auto > auto wins trades) Level 3: W — Move Quick (escape ganks) Level 4: Q

Mushroom Placement Guide

Lane Phase Shrooms

  • Bush entrances — the enemy jungler will step on them every gank attempt
  • Behind your minion wave — escape path if you get ganked
  • The river — prevents roams from enemy mid/jungle

Mid Game Shrooms

  • Dragon / Baron pit entrances — contest objective vision
  • Enemy jungle buffs — placed in the bush next to Red/Blue buff
  • Lane choke points — the narrow paths between towers

Late Game Shrooms

  • Your base entrances — prevent backdoor attempts
  • All jungle entrances — creates a minefield the enemy can't walk through
  • The death bush — stack 3-4 mushrooms in one bush; any squishy who walks in dies
  • Baron / Elder pit — blanket the entire area before objectives

Pro Shroom Tips

  • Shrooms last 5 minutes — plant as many as possible before objectives spawn
  • Throw shrooms over walls into fog of war to avoid being seen
  • A mushroom bounces when thrown — you can reach further by aiming at the edge
  • Enemies with Oracle Lens can see shrooms; bait the lens then place new ones
  • At 3 items + Ultimate Hunter, you can place a shroom every ~15 seconds

Gameplay Tips

Lane Phase

  • Auto-attack constantly — your E poison adds up. Every time the enemy goes for CS, auto them.
  • Q + 2-3 autos = won trade. Use Q when they commit to an auto-attack animation (can't cancel).
  • Don't push blindly — you have no dash. Ward river bush and river entrance.
  • At level 6, immediately shroom both river entrances and the tri-bush.
  • Against melee champions, stand between them and the minion wave — they can't farm without getting poked.

Mid Game

  • Split-push side lanes — Teemo isn't a great teamfighter, but he's an excellent split-pusher
  • Shroom the paths to your lane so you can see who's coming to stop you
  • Use passive (stand still for 1.5s to stealth) to ambush enemies farming alone
  • Control objectives — a pre-shroomed Dragon pit wins teamfights before they start

Late Game / Teamfights

  • Shroom the battlefield before the fight — your team should fight in shroomed areas
  • Q the enemy ADC at the start of the fight — 2.5 seconds of blindness negates their damage
  • Stay at max auto-attack range and kite backwards
  • You are not a frontliner — stay with your ADC and peel with Q
  • If the fight is lost, shroom your escape path to slow pursuers

Counters

Strong Against

  • Garen — Blind negates Q; you out-range and out-poke
  • Tryndamere — Blind negates all his damage; shrooms slow his spin
  • Nasus — Blind prevents Q stacks; you can zone him off the wave
  • Any melee auto-attacker — Jax, Irelia, Master Yi, Yasuo

Weak Against

  • Malphite — Q poke doesn't matter when he ults you; you can't blind his spells
  • Rumble — Flame spitter isn't blocked by blind; out-trades with Q
  • Vladimir — No auto-attacks to blind; out-sustains your poke
  • Aatrox — Sweet spot Qs hit you from outside your auto range

FAQ

Is Teemo actually good or just annoying?

Teemo is a legitimate pick in classic League of Legends, especially as a counter-pick against melee auto-attackers. His global map pressure with mushrooms is unique — no other champion can control space like Teemo. He's "annoying" because he forces the enemy team to play differently (buying Oracle Lens, sweepers, and walking carefully). That psychological pressure is a real competitive advantage.

How do I play Teemo in teamfights?

Teemo's teamfight role is zone control and ADC negation. Before the fight, shroom your team's retreat path and flank routes. During the fight, Q the enemy ADC and auto-attack the nearest target. Your mushrooms should create areas the enemy can't walk through — funnel them into your team's damage.

What is the best Teemo build right now?

In classic LoL, AP Teemo (Liandry's → Nashor's → Demonic) is the strongest build. On-hit Teemo (Kraken Slayer → Wit's End → Guinsoo's) is viable for split-pushing but loses the map-control strength of AP mushroom damage.
