Introduction

Ryze, the Rune Mage, is one of the most iconic and mechanically deep mages in League of Legends Classic. His kit revolves around spell weaving — chaining abilities together to reset his core damage spell, Overload (Q). Ryze's passive, Arcane Mastery, increases his maximum mana based on AP and empowers his abilities with bonus mana scaling. In classic LoL, Ryze is a short-range battle mage who rewards patience, positioning, and combo precision. He scales incredibly well into the late game but requires practice to execute properly under pressure.

Classic Build

Core Items

| Item | Cost | Why | |------|------|-----| | Rod of Ages | 2,800g | HP, mana, AP — the perfect scaling item for Ryze | | Archangel's Staff / Seraph's Embrace | 3,000g | Massive mana pool and AP-from-mana conversion | | Rabadon's Deathcap | 3,600g | Multiplies all your AP, including AP from mana |

Full Build

  1. Rod of Ages — Scaling HP, mana, and AP (buy first, it needs 10 min to stack)
  2. Archangel's Staff — Tear stacking into Seraph's Embrace shield
  3. Sorcerer's Shoes — Flat magic penetration
  4. Rabadon's Deathcap — AP multiplier for your mana-based AP
  5. Void Staff — % Magic penetration against MR
  6. Frozen Heart — Armor, mana (adds AP via passive), and CDR

Situational Items

  • Zhonya's Hourglass — Stasis for diving in teamfights
  • Banshee's Veil — Spell shield against pick comps
  • Morellonomicon — Anti-heal against sustain teams
  • Cosmic Drive — Movement speed and ability haste for kiting

Runes

Primary: Sorcery

  • Phase Rush — Hit 3 spells to gain a massive speed boost (E > W > Q procs it instantly)
  • Manaflow Band — Bonus max mana = more AP for Ryze
  • Transcendence — Ability haste at level 8 and 11
  • Gathering Storm — Scaling AP every 10 minutes

Secondary: Domination

  • Taste of Blood — Lane sustain during trades
  • Ravenous Hunter — Spell vamp from all your damage

Stat Shards

  • Adaptive Force
  • Adaptive Force
  • Armor / Magic Resist (matchup dependent)

Skill Order

Q > E > W

  1. Overload (Q) — Max first; primary damage (resets with W and E)
  2. Spell Flux (E) — Max second; spreads flux to nearby enemies
  3. Rune Prison (W) — Max last; instant root, value is the CC not damage
  4. Realm Warp (R) — Take at 6/11/16 for map mobility

Early Levels

Level 1: Q — Overload (farming and poke) Level 2: W — Rune Prison (root + Q reset) Level 3: E — Spell Flux (spread damage) Level 4: Q

Combos (Crucial for Ryze)

Ryze's kit is built around two rune charges. W and E each generate a rune. At 2 runes, your next Q is empowered and you gain a movement speed burst. Mastering this flow is the key to playing Ryze.

Basic Trade Combo

Q > W > Q > E > Q

Start a Q, root them with W (generates 1st rune), Q again, E to spread flux (2nd rune), empowered Q for big damage + speed boost to disengage.

Wave Clear Combo

E > E > Q

Cast E twice on the wave to spread flux to all minions, then Q the center minion — the empowered Q deals AoE damage to the entire wave.

All-In / Teamfight Combo

Q > E > W > Q > E > Q

Start Q → spread flux with E → root with W (1st rune) → Q → flux again with E (2nd rune) → empowered Q. This chains maximum Overload resets for sustained DPS.

Gameplay Tips

Lane Phase

  • Farm with auto-attacks, not spells — Ryze is mana-hungry early
  • Use W > Q > E > Q to punish enemies who step too close
  • At level 3, you can out-trade most mids with proper combo execution
  • Rush Tear on first back — you need to start stacking mana ASAP
  • Ryze's weakness pre-6: no escape, short range, vulnerable to ganks

Mid Game

  • Use Realm Warp (R) to gank bot lane — coordinate with your jungler
  • Realm Warp can also save teammates: cast it under a CC'd ally to teleport them out
  • Side lane farm to stack Rod of Ages and Tear — your scaling is exponential
  • Don't Realm Warp blindly into fog of war — it's a team-wide teleport

Late Game / Teamfights

  • Stay at max Q range and kite backwards with Phase Rush
  • Weave spells on the nearest target — you shred tanks with sustained DPS
  • Realm Warp behind the enemy team to cut off their escape
  • Seraph's Embrace shield + Phase Rush makes you deceptively tanky
  • Your job is consistent AP DPS, not burst — don't dive carries, melt front-to-back

Counters

Strong Against

  • Kassadin — Ryze out-trades early and scales just as hard
  • Vladimir — Root prevents pool escape; Ryze out-ranges
  • Zed — W root punishes Zed's ultimate; Phase Rush kites his shadow

Weak Against

  • Lux — Out-ranges Ryze significantly; never in spell range
  • Xerath — Pokes from two screens away
  • LeBlanc — Burst is too fast for Ryze's sustained DPS pattern
  • Anivia — Wall + stun punishes Ryze's short range

FAQ

Is Ryze hard to play?

Yes — Ryze is one of the hardest champions in League of Legends Classic. His combo execution requires muscle memory, his short range demands precise positioning, and his Realm Warp (R) can throw games as easily as it can win them. But mastering Ryze is incredibly rewarding — a well-played Ryze deals the highest sustained magic DPS in the game.

Why does Ryze build mana items?

Ryze's passive, Arcane Mastery, increases his maximum mana by 5% per 100 AP and increases his AP by 3% of bonus mana. This creates a feedback loop: building mana gives AP, and building AP gives mana. Items like Rod of Ages and Archangel's Staff are doubly efficient on Ryze.

How do I use Realm Warp correctly?

Realm Warp teleports Ryze and all allies in the circle to a target location after a 2-second channel. Use it to: (1) gank lanes with your jungler, (2) rotate to objectives faster, (3) escape bad fights with your team, or (4) flank the enemy backline. Never cast it into unwarded territory — you're delivering your whole team into potential death.
