Introduction

Alistar, the Minotaur, is one of League of Legends' original support champions and remains a premier engage tank in classic LoL. His kit is built around the iconic Headbutt + Pulverize (W-Q) combo — a long-range knockup that can initiate teamfights, peel for carries, or catch rotating enemies. His ultimate Unbreakable Will (R) gives him 55-75% damage reduction and cleanses all CC, making him the tankiest champion in the game for 7 seconds. In classic LoL, Alistar teaches engage timing, peel discipline, and the difference between a good support and a game-winning support.

Classic Build

Core Items

| Item | Cost | Why | |------|------|-----| | Locket of the Iron Solari | 2,500g | AoE shield for your whole team on activation | | Knight's Vow | 2,200g | Redirects damage from your ADC to you; you're tanky enough | | Zeke's Convergence | 2,400g | AoE slow and bonus damage when you immobilize enemies |

Full Build

  1. Relic Shield (Support Item) — Execute minions for gold sharing
  2. Locket of the Iron Solari — Team-wide shield in fights
  3. Knight's Vow — Bond to your ADC; keep them alive at all costs
  4. Zeke's Convergence — Immobilize triggers AoE slow field
  5. Plated Steelcaps / Mercury's Treads — Defensive boots
  6. Thornmail / Force of Nature — Situational defense

Situational Items

  • Redemption — Global heal for cross-map saves
  • Mikael's Blessing — Cleanse CC from your carry
  • Frozen Heart — Attack speed slow aura against heavy AD
  • Gargoyle Stoneplate — Massive shield when diving 5 enemies

Runes

Primary: Resolve

  • Aftershock — Land W-Q, gain massive armor and MR; explode for AoE damage
  • Font of Life — Allies heal when attacking enemies you CC'd
  • Bone Plating — Reduce burst in trades
  • Unflinching — Tenacity and slow resist; stack with R

Secondary: Inspiration

  • Hextech Flashtraption — Channel Flash from bushes for unexpected engages
  • Cosmic Insight — Item ability haste + summoner spell haste

Stat Shards

  • Ability Haste
  • Armor
  • Armor / Magic Resist

Skill Order

W > Q > E

  1. Headbutt (W) — Max first; lower cooldown = more engages per fight
  2. Pulverize (Q) — Max second; AoE knockup damage
  3. Triumphant Roar (E) — One point early for sustain; max last
  4. Unbreakable Will (R) — Take whenever possible (6/11/16)

Early Levels

Level 1: Q — Pulverize (for invades or defensive peel) Level 2: W — Headbutt (W-Q combo online; lane is now dangerous for enemies) Level 3: E — Triumphant Roar (sustain for your ADC) Level 4: W

The W-Q Combo

How to Execute

W → Q in quick succession. Press W on the target, and while Alistar is dashing toward them, press Q. The timing: press Q when Alistar is about to make contact with the Headbutt. Done correctly, the enemy is knocked up in place instead of knocked back.

Common Combo Mistakes

  • Pressing Q too early: You Pulverize the ground before reaching the target, missing both abilities
  • Pressing Q too late: You Headbutt the enemy away, then Pulverize nothing — saving their life
  • High ping: W-Q is unreliable above 60ms ping. Practice in the practice tool until the timing is muscle memory

Advanced Combos

  • Flash → Q → W backwards: Flash onto the enemy, knock them up with Q, walk behind them, Headbutt (W) them toward your team. No W-Q timing required.
  • W-Q → Flash: Start the W-Q combo, and during the Q animation, Flash onto a different target. The Q knockup follows your Flash.
  • Hexflash → W-Q: Channel Hexflash from a bush, then immediately W-Q onto the unsuspecting enemy.

Gameplay Tips

Lane Phase

  • Threaten constantly — just standing in a forward position makes the enemy ADC scared to farm
  • Don't waste W-Q when it's on cooldown — you're useless for 14 seconds
  • Use passive (E) to heal your ADC after trades — it charges from nearby minion deaths
  • At level 2, ping your ADC and look for W-Q on the enemy ADC
  • Roam mid whenever your ADC recalls — Alistar ganks are devastating

Mid Game

  • Ward deep — Alistar's tankiness lets him ward enemy jungle safely
  • Control vision around objectives 1 minute before spawn
  • Look for Hexflash engages from fog of war
  • Peel for your ADC in fights — it's tempting to dive, but sometimes W'ing the enemy assassin away is the correct play

Late Game / Teamfights

  • Engage or peel — decide before the fight starts. Are you diving or protecting?
  • If diving: W-Q the priority target → R when focused → E for sustain
  • If peeling: stand on your ADC and W any diver away
  • Your R cleanses CC — use it reactively when stunned or suppressed
  • After your initial combo, body-block skillshots for your carries

Counters

Strong Against

  • Leona — W-Q her engage; she can't get onto your ADC
  • Blitzcrank — Let him hook you, then R and walk out (or W-Q their ADC)
  • Rakan — Headbutt cancels his W dash
  • Immobile ADCs — Jinx, Ashe, Aphelios have no answer to W-Q

Weak Against

  • Morgana — Black Shield blocks your W-Q entirely
  • Janna — Tornado interrupts your Headbutt mid-dash
  • Thresh — Flay cancels your W; lantern saves your target
  • Poppy — Steadfast Presence blocks your W entirely

FAQ

Is Alistar a good support for beginners?

Alistar's kit is straightforward, but the W-Q combo requires practice. Spend 15 minutes in the practice tool before playing your first game. Once the combo is muscle memory, Alistar is one of the most forgiving supports — his ultimate makes him nearly unkillable.

How do I use Alistar's ultimate correctly?

Unbreakable Will (R) gives 55-75% damage reduction and cleanses all CC. Use it reactively: when you get stunned, rooted, or focused. Don't use it preemptively — the CC cleanse is too valuable. At rank 3, 75% damage reduction means you take one-quarter damage for 7 seconds.

Should I engage or peel as Alistar?

This is the hardest decision on Alistar. Generally: engage if your team is ahead, peel if your team is behind. If your ADC is the only fed member, your W should be used to push assassins away, not to start fights. Communication helps — tell your team your plan before objectives.
